In an era where our smartphones have become the center of our personal and professional lives, we always wish for our phones’ batteries to last as long as possible.
While we eagerly await technological advancements in the world of batteries and the invention of a battery that will last for many years, there are several tips and steps that iPhone users can follow to preserve their devices’ batteries for as long as possible.
1 Charge smartly
You can take advantage of iOS features to preserve battery life, the most important of which is the Optimized Battery Charging feature, which is a smart feature designed to preserve the life of your iPhone battery by learning your charging habits and patterns throughout the day.
When this feature is activated, the system maintains the battery charge at 80% throughout the night, then completes the charge to 100% before your usual wake-up time in the morning. This method reduces the pressure on lithium-ion batteries, which slows down the process of their natural deterioration over time.
To activate this feature, go to Settings, then to Battery, then choose Battery Health & Charging.
2 Knowing the sources of depletion
Wondering where your iPhone battery drains during the day? iOS lets you track battery consumption based on the app that’s draining it, and you can access this information via Settings, then Battery. This feature lets you identify apps or games that are constantly consuming battery power.
If there’s a specific app or game that’s draining your battery excessively, you can reduce its usage, use it only when your phone is plugged in to the charger, or even delete it and look for an alternative.
3 Optimize settings
Disabling certain features in your phone’s settings can improve overall battery life. While some of them can be helpful, we don’t use our devices the same way. For example, one feature that Apple suggests you disable if your phone’s battery life is an issue is Background App Refresh, which you can find in Settings, then select General.
This feature allows apps to run periodically in the background to download data such as email, or upload other data such as photos and media to the cloud.
Notifications that light up your phone’s screen also drain battery power, so you can customize your notification preferences through Settings, then select Notifications to stop any notifications you deem unnecessary from any app on your phone.
For example, if social media apps are the main culprit in draining your battery, you can reduce the frequency of their notifications or even turn them off completely to reduce battery power consumption.
4 Reduce consumption
If you have an iPhone with an OLED screen, using Dark Mode can significantly reduce power consumption, because this type of screen displays pure black by turning off the pixels, which can save about 30% of battery life if the right conditions are available.
You can activate Dark Mode through Settings, then select Display & Brightness and select Dark Mode. You can also specify specific times of the day to activate this mode, and it is best to choose to activate it during the night, to also protect your eyes, especially if you are browsing the phone before bed in a dark room.
You can also reduce consumption by activating Low Power Mode, which you can access through Settings then Battery, as this mode reduces the phone’s activity in the background, reduces the screen brightness, and limits animations within the operating system, with the aim of preserving the battery charge for the longest possible period.
